The Book of Paradise / The Book of Life

Icyk Manger wrote The Book of Paradise (yid. ”Dos bukh fun gan-eydn”) in 1939. In it, he made reference to the Jewish legend according to which before being born each person exists in paradise in the form of an angel. When the day of their transition to earth approaches, they receive a flick to the nose that brings forgetting. They must learn to live all over again.

The heroes of Manger’s book succeed in maintaining their memory of heavenly life. Szmul Aba avoids amnesia thanks to a strategy and friendship.

Reading this story and wondering how to illustrate the first chapter, we asked ourselves: what is paradise for us? Can paradise be a world that we suddenly lose? Can everyday “grey reality” become something that we will long for and that we will idealise in the future?

In our memories, there is a place for the “paradise” of childhood, tastes and experiences. When does the moment of “banishment” occur? What is the border between that which was beautiful and that which has become everyday, or even frustrating?

We decided to look at the world around us as at a paradise that we can lose. To look at Warsaw through the eyes of a potential exile. We would long for sunrise over Aleje Jerozolimskie, the trees on flower in the Kępa Potocka Park, or even for the ordinary block housing where those close to us live.
We would feel a chasm in parting with friends.

In this situation, would memory of a peaceful life and human warmth be for us a saviour or a curse? Who would choose the strategy of avoiding the flick to the nose?

A lot of things separate us. Is it age, profession or maybe life experience?
We share however a common bond - a passion for photography.
We may have different perspectives yet we have similar expectations of life.

So let's hold hands and face the world together, head high...
